It depends on the zone the fitting sits in. Directly above a bath or shower needs the highest protection; the zones immediately around them generally call for splash protection of IPX4 or better; beyond that a standard fitting is usually acceptable. The zones are defined in AS/NZS 3000 — your electrician confirms what applies where.
What is the best colour temperature for a bathroom mirror?
4000K neutral white. It renders skin tones accurately for shaving and make-up without the yellow cast of warm white or the clinical edge of daylight. Keep the mirror light and the main ceiling light at the same temperature.
Should vanity lights go above or beside the mirror?
Beside, if you can — a light on each side at roughly face height lights your face evenly. A single light above casts shadows downwards into the eye sockets and under the chin, which is the least flattering and least useful arrangement.
Can I put downlights in a bathroom?
Yes, provided they carry the right rating for the zone. Downlights alone will leave you in your own shadow at the mirror, so pair them with a dedicated vanity or mirror light.
