Choosing an outdoor heater
Radiant or convection heating outdoors?
Radiant, essentially always. Radiant heat warms objects and people directly, the way sun does, so it still works in moving air. Convection heaters warm the air, and outdoors that air simply blows away — it is why a patio heater that works indoors feels useless on a verandah.
How much heating power does an alfresco area need?
As a rough guide, allow around 1,000W for every 4 to 6 square metres you actually want warm, then add for open sides and wind exposure. It is better to cover the seating area properly than to spread thin heat over the whole space.
How high should an outdoor heater be mounted?
Typically 2.1 to 2.4m for a wall or ceiling-mounted radiant unit, and always within the clearances in the instructions. Too low and it is uncomfortable and a burn risk; too high and the heat is wasted before it reaches anyone.
Can an outdoor heater be left out in the weather?
Only to the rating on the product page. IP65 units handle an exposed position; lower ratings need a covered area. Even weather-rated heaters last longer under a roof.
