What size ceiling fan do I need?
Match blade span to the room. As a guide, 48 inches suits a bedroom or a room up to about 4m × 4m, 52 inches is the most common size in Australian homes and covers most living rooms, and 56 inches and up suits larger or open-plan spaces. A large fan turning slowly moves more air, and makes less noise doing it, than a small fan working hard.
How much clearance does a ceiling fan need?
The usual requirement is a minimum of 2.1m from the floor to the blades, and you want roughly 300mm between the blade tips and the nearest wall or beam. On a standard 2.4m ceiling that means a low-profile or hugger fan rather than a downrod. Your electrician will confirm what is compliant in your installation.
Does the number of blades matter?
Less than people expect. Blade pitch, motor and overall span decide airflow far more than blade count does. Three blades tend to be more efficient and are the norm on DC fans; four and five blades usually run a touch quieter and look more traditional. Compare the airflow figure in m³/hr rather than counting blades.
Can I use an indoor ceiling fan outside?
No. An indoor fan under a patio roof will corrode, the blades can warp with humidity, and it voids the warranty on almost every brand. You need a fan rated for the position — IP-rated with sealed motor housing and ABS or treated blades for covered outdoor areas, and 316 stainless for coastal.
Do ceiling fans actually cool a room?
They cool people, not air. A fan creates a wind-chill effect on skin that feels several degrees cooler, but it adds a small amount of heat to the room from the motor. That is why you turn a fan off when you leave — running one in an empty room does nothing but use power.
