How much power does a DC ceiling fan use?
Typically around 30W at top speed against 60–75W for a comparable AC fan, and only a few watts on the lower speeds. Over a summer of daily use the difference is real but modest in dollars — the stronger arguments for DC are the noise and the control.
Why are DC fans quieter?
A DC motor does not hum at mains frequency the way an AC motor can, and it holds low speeds smoothly instead of stalling into a buzz. On the bottom two speeds a good DC fan is essentially inaudible over background noise, which is why they are worth the premium in bedrooms.
How many speeds do DC fans have?
Usually six, against three on most AC fans, plus a reverse setting for winter. The extra steps matter more than they sound: the gap between "not enough" and "too much" on a three-speed fan is where most complaints come from.
Can a DC fan run off my existing wall switch?
Not as a speed controller. DC fans use an electronic module and are controlled by their supplied remote or a compatible wall control — an old AC fan speed controller will not work and can damage the module. The existing switch can still isolate power to the fan.
Can I put a DC fan on a dimmer?
No. Never wire a fan motor through a light dimmer. If the fan has an integrated light, that light circuit may be dimmable via the remote, but the motor is always controlled by its own module.
Match blade span to the room: roughly 48" up to 4x4m, 52" for most living rooms, 56" and above for open plan. A DC motor costs more up front and pays it back in running cost and quiet.
