Does outdoor lighting need to be on its own circuit?
Not necessarily, but it usually should be — it makes it easy to switch everything outside from one place and to put the lot on a timer or sensor. Your electrician will advise based on the load and the existing board.
Is 12V or 240V better for garden lighting?
12V systems are safer to work around, easier to extend later, and are the norm for garden bed and path lighting. 240V suits permanent wall-mounted fittings and longer cable runs where voltage drop would be a problem on low voltage.
How do I avoid annoying the neighbours?
Aim light down, not out. Shielded fittings, lower mounting heights and warmer colour temperatures keep light on your property. A bright, unshielded floodlight pointed across a boundary is the most common cause of a complaint.
Do solar garden lights work in Australia?
In a position that gets direct sun for most of the day, reasonably well for path marking and accent use. They are not a substitute for wired lighting where you need reliable brightness — output drops through winter and after a run of overcast days.
