A 3-in-1 bathroom heater puts a heater, an exhaust fan and a light into one ceiling cut-out. It is the single most-installed fitting in an Australian bathroom renovation, and it is also the one most often bought on price alone — which is how people end up with a warm bathroom that still grows mould in the grout.
This guide covers the three specs that actually decide whether a unit works in your room, then walks the current bathroom heaters range model by model. Everything here is Martec, because that is what we stock as an authorised stockist, and every figure quoted is the manufacturer's own.
Start with extraction, not heat
Extraction is the spec that decides whether the unit does its real job. Heat is comfort; extraction is what stops condensation turning into mould, peeling paint and swollen door frames. Every manufacturer quotes it in cubic metres per hour (m³/hr).
The working rule is room volume × 10 — you want the fan capable of changing the air in the room about ten times an hour. Measure length × width × height in metres, then multiply the result by ten.

The Australian building rules give you a floor, not a target. Under the National Construction Code a mechanically ventilated bathroom needs at least 25 litres per second, which is only 90 m³/hr. That is the legal minimum for a sanitary compartment — it is not the figure that keeps a family bathroom dry after two back-to-back showers.
Tip: Buy up, not down. The gap between a 300 m³/hr unit and a 500 m³/hr unit is usually $40–$80, and it is the cheapest insurance against mould you will ever buy. Overspecifying extraction costs you nothing in running cost, because the fan only runs when it is switched on.
Where the unit goes matters as much as the number
Mount it between the shower and the rest of the room, not directly over the shower rose. Directly overhead, the fan pulls the warm plume straight up and out before it has crossed the room, and the far corners stay damp. Ducting should run as short and as straight as practical to an external vent — every extra metre of flexible duct and every tight bend costs you real airflow against the rated figure.
Heat lamps vs heat tubes vs PTC elements
Three heating technologies show up in this category and they behave completely differently. This is the choice people get wrong most often.
Infrared heat lamps (275W globes)
The classic Australian setup: two or four 275W infrared globes behind a fascia. They heat you, not the air, by direct radiation — so you feel it within a second of switching on, and you feel it most standing directly underneath. Cheap to buy, effective for drying off, and the globes are a consumable you will replace every few years. Four lamps draw 1,100W, so it is not a heater to leave running.
R7s linear heat tubes (1000W)
A single 1000W quartz tube instead of multiple globes. Same instant radiant heat, but it spreads across the fascia rather than pooling under two hot spots, and there is only one consumable instead of four. This is what the higher-end units in the range use.
PTC ceramic elements
A fan blows air across a self-regulating ceramic element. Slower to feel than radiant — you are warming the room, not the person — but the warmth stays after switch-off, there is nothing to replace, and it can be thermostatically controlled. In this range PTC appears on the wall-mounted Thermo rather than the ceiling units.
Watch out: Never handle a new R7s tube or heat globe with bare fingers. The oil from your skin creates a hot spot on the quartz and shortens the life of the lamp dramatically. Use a tissue or a clean glove.
How much light you actually get
Treat the light in a 3-in-1 as task lighting for the room, not as the whole lighting plan. As a rough target a bathroom wants around 400–500 lumens per square metre, so a 12 m² bathroom is looking for roughly 5,000 lumens all up. The brightest unit in this range puts out 2,400 lm. The rest comes from downlights — one over the vanity, one over the shower, one in the general space.
Nearly everything here is tri-colour (CCT switchable) between 3000K, 4000K and 5000K, set with a dip switch at installation. For a bathroom, 4000K is the setting most people land on: warm enough not to feel like a hospital, cool enough to shave and apply makeup by. If the rest of your house is 3000K, match it — mismatched colour temperature between adjacent rooms is far more noticeable than either temperature on its own. This is the pick if you have a big bathroom or one that fogs badly. 600 m³/hr is the highest figure in the range and the DC motor is the reason it manages that at 40 dB instead of 50 — the difference between a fan you notice and one you don't. The four GU10 lamps also make it the only unit here bright enough to genuinely light a medium bathroom on its own. It is the most expensive option and it earns it on the two specs that matter.

Two units that are not 3-in-1s, but often the better answer
Martec Uno single heat lamp (MBHU1LW) — $60.49. A single 275W infrared lamp in a 155 mm cut-out. If you already have good extraction and good light and just want warmth over the drying area, this is all you need. Not dimmable.
Martec Thermo 2200W PTC wall heater with towel rail (MBHT2200W) — $196. Installation, cut-outs and ceiling depth
Three numbers decide whether a unit physically fits, and they are the ones people check last:
- Cut-out size — the hole in the plasterboard. The Striker 4 is 320 × 320 mm; the Profile Panel 2 is 435 × 255 mm; the Forme is 375 × 202 mm. If you are replacing an existing unit, measure the current hole before you buy, because a smaller replacement means patching and a larger one means a bigger hole in a waterproofed ceiling.
- Minimum ceiling depth — clearance above the plasterboard. Most of these units need 200–220 mm. In a flat-roofed apartment or under a low pitch that is not guaranteed.
- Duct diameter — commonly 120–150 mm. The duct has to reach an external vent; venting into the roof cavity moves the moisture problem rather than solving it, and it is not compliant.

Frequently asked questions
What size 3-in-1 bathroom heater do I need?
Multiply your bathroom's length × width × height in metres to get the volume, then multiply by 10. A 2.5 × 2.0 × 2.4 m bathroom is 12 m³, so you want around 120 m³/hr as an absolute minimum and 250–400 m³/hr to keep it genuinely dry. The NCC minimum of 25 L/s (90 m³/hr) is a legal floor, not a design target.
Are heat lamps or a heat tube better?
Both give instant radiant heat. A 1000W R7s tube spreads the heat across the fascia and gives you one consumable instead of four, which is why it appears on the higher-spec units. Four 275W heat lamps deliver more concentrated warmth directly underneath and cost less up front, but draw 1,100W and need replacing more often.
Can I run the heater and the exhaust fan at the same time?
On these units, yes — they are separately switched, which is why they ship with a 3-gang or 4-gang wall plate. Running both together does mean you are heating air you are then extracting, so most people run the heater while showering and leave the fan going for 10–15 minutes afterwards.
How long should I leave the exhaust fan running after a shower?
At least 10 minutes, ideally 15–20. Most of the moisture is still airborne and on the surfaces when you step out, and switching the fan off with the light is the single most common reason a well-specified bathroom still gets mould. A run-on timer or a separate switch fixes it.
Do I need a licensed electrician to install one?
Yes. These are hard-wired ceiling fittings in a wet area, and in Australia that is licensed electrical work. Some ceiling exhaust fans in this range are supplied with a flex and plug for connection to an existing switched socket, but the 3-in-1 units are not.
