3000K vs 4000K vs 5000K: Choosing LED Colour Temperature
Almost every LED fitting sold in Australia now is tri-colour — you can select 3000K, 4000K or 5000K with a small switch on the fitting before it goes into the ceiling. That is a genuinely useful feature and it is also where a lot of lighting goes wrong, because the switch gets set to whatever position it arrived in and nobody looks at it again until the room is finished and feels cold.
This guide explains what those numbers mean, what each one looks like in a real Australian room, and which to pick where.
What Kelvin actually measures
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and describes the colour of white light, not its brightness. Brightness is lumens, and the two are completely independent — a 5000K lamp is not brighter than a 3000K lamp of the same lumen output, it just looks it.
The scale runs backwards from how most people think about temperature. Low numbers are warm (orange-yellow); high numbers are cool (blue-white). It comes from the colour a theoretical black body radiates when heated: at around 2,700 Kelvin it glows like an old incandescent bulb, and by 5,500 K it looks like midday sun.

The three temperatures compared
3000K — warm white
The closest LED equivalent to the halogen and incandescent light most Australian houses grew up with. It flatters skin tones, makes timber, brick and warm paint colours look right, and reads as relaxing. Its weakness is that it can make cool greys, whites and stainless steel look slightly yellow or dirty, and it is not ideal light for detailed work.
Use it in: bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, anywhere with timber floors or warm-toned finishes, and anywhere you want the room to feel comfortable rather than functional.
4000K — natural white
The middle setting, and the one that suits the most rooms. Clean and neutral without being clinical. Whites read as white, greys read as grey, and there is enough clarity to work by. If you are unsure — and this genuinely applies to most people — 4000K is the setting to choose.
Use it in: kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, home offices, garages, hallways in a contemporary house, and any room where the finishes are cool-toned.
5000K — cool white / daylight
Bright, crisp and high-contrast. Excellent for tasks where you need to see detail and judge colour accurately. In a domestic living space it reads as cold and institutional, and in the evening it works against winding down — blue-weighted light suppresses melatonin, which is exactly the wrong effect at 10pm.
Use it in: garages, workshops, sheds, laundries, walk-in robes, commercial spaces, security lighting, under-cabinet task lighting.
Tip: If you cannot decide, hold a sample of your benchtop, tile or floor under each setting before the fitting goes in. Colour temperature interacts with your finishes far more than any chart can capture — the same 4000K downlight looks entirely different over a white quartz benchtop and over spotted gum.

The rule that matters most
If you take one thing from this page: consistency within a sightline matters more than which temperature you choose.
A 3000K house is lovely. A 4000K house is lovely. A house where the kitchen is 4000K and the adjoining living room is 3000K, both visible from the same sofa, looks like something is broken. The eye adapts to a single colour temperature very happily and picks up a mismatch between two immediately.
So: pick one temperature for all the connected living areas and stick to it. Where you do want to change — a 5000K garage, a 4000K laundry — make sure there is a door or a genuine break in the sightline between the two.
Watch for these specific traps:
- The fan light and the downlights. A ceiling fan's integrated light and the surrounding downlights are in the same field of view, permanently. Set them to the same temperature.
- The 3-in-1 and the bathroom downlights. Same problem, smaller room, more obvious.
- Replacing one failed fitting. A single new downlight in a row of older ones will stand out unless you match the temperature — and LED colour drifts slightly over years of use, so an exact match is not always possible.
- Outdoor lights visible from inside at night. A 5000K bunker light outside a 3000K living room window reads as a floodlight.
CRI — the spec nobody checks
Colour Rendering Index measures how accurately a light source shows colours compared to natural daylight, on a scale to 100. It is a completely separate thing from colour temperature and it is arguably more important to how good a room looks.
- CRI <80 — poor. Colours look flat and muddy, skin tones look unwell. Common in very cheap fittings.
- CRI 80–89 — good. The standard for quality residential fittings and what most of the range here achieves.
- CRI 90+ — excellent. Worth specifying in a kitchen, a dressing room, or anywhere you judge colour.
A 3000K lamp with CRI 90 will make a room look better than a 3000K lamp with CRI 75, at identical brightness and identical colour temperature. If a product does not publish a CRI figure, that is usually because the figure is not flattering. The Martec Titan II publishes CRI >80.
How tri-colour fittings work
A tri-colour (CCT switchable) fitting contains two sets of LED chips — one warm, one cool — and a small switch that changes the mix. Set the switch before the fitting goes into the ceiling; on most fittings it is on the body or the driver and becomes very hard to reach afterwards.
Two things worth knowing:
- Lumen output changes with the setting. It is usually highest at 4000K. The Martec Prime, for example, is quoted across a range up to 1,080 lm, and the Zone at 780 lm / 850 lm / 820 lm across 3000K / 4000K / 5000K. - Tri-colour is not tunable. It is three fixed positions set once by hand, not something you change from an app or a switch on the wall. Genuinely tunable white is a different, more expensive product category.
The main advantage of tri-colour is stock and flexibility: one product covers every room, you can change your mind at installation, and replacing a failed fitting years later does not depend on that exact colour temperature still being sold.
Where you will find it in the range
Nearly everywhere: downlights (Titan II, Prime, Blitz II, Arte, Rex Gimbal, Niko, Zone), oyster & ceiling lights (Quest, Spectra, Orbit, Conrad, Eclipse II), spotlights (Fortress II, Defender, Bandit), step lights and garden & spike lights. The DC ceiling fans with integrated lights mostly run a wider 2700K–6000K range rather than three fixed steps, and are dimmable — the Hampton and Viper are typical. The 3-in-1 bathroom units use three fixed steps set at installation.
The exception to watch for: some entry-level fittings are fixed colour temperature. The Martec Contour 3-in-1 units, for instance, ship with a fixed 3000K R80 lamp rather than a switchable one. If your bathroom is otherwise 4000K, that is worth knowing before it is installed.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3000K or 4000K better for a house?
3000K for bedrooms and living areas, 4000K for kitchens, bathrooms and work spaces. If you want one temperature throughout, 4000K suits contemporary interiors with cool-toned finishes and 3000K suits warmer palettes with timber and softer colours.
What colour temperature is best for a kitchen?
4000K. It gives you clean, accurate light for food preparation without the clinical feel of 5000K. Add dedicated task lighting under the cabinets so the benchtops are not lit only from behind you.
What colour temperature should bathroom lights be?
4000K for most bathrooms — neutral enough to shave and apply makeup by. Drop to 3000K if the tiling and joinery are warm-toned, and make sure the 3-in-1's light and the downlights are set to the same temperature.
Is 5000K too bright for a living room?
It is not brighter — brightness is lumens — but it reads as cold and institutional in a living space, and blue-weighted light in the evening works against winding down. Keep 5000K for garages, workshops, laundries and security lighting.
Can I change the colour temperature after installation?
On a tri-colour fitting, only by getting back to the switch on the fitting or driver — which usually means dropping it out of the ceiling. Set it before installation. Fittings with genuinely adjustable white from an app are a separate, more expensive product type.
What is CRI and does it matter?
Colour Rendering Index measures how accurately a light shows colours, out of 100. CRI 80–89 is the standard for good residential fittings and CRI 90+ is worth specifying in kitchens and dressing rooms. It affects how a room looks at least as much as colour temperature does.
Do warm white lights attract fewer insects?
Yes. Insects are drawn to shorter wavelengths, so a 3000K exterior light attracts noticeably fewer than a 5000K one. It is a good reason to keep outdoor entertaining areas warm and reserve cool white for security lighting away from where you sit.
