Outdoor Security Lighting Guide: Lumens, PIR Sensors and IP Ratings

The instinct with security lighting is to buy the brightest thing available and point it at the driveway. It is the wrong instinct. A single very bright floodlight creates glare, and glare creates deep shadow immediately beside it — which is precisely where somebody would stand. It also blinds your own security camera and irritates the neighbours into complaining.

Good exterior lighting is about coverage, control and consistency rather than raw output. Here is how to plan it.

Four principles

  1. Even coverage beats peak brightness. Several moderate lights spread around the property give better visibility than one very bright one, because they eliminate the shadows rather than deepening them.
  2. Aim down, not out. A light aimed outward at head height puts glare into eyes and cameras and spills across the boundary. Mount high and tilt down.
  3. Light the approaches, not the middle. Gates, side paths, the space between the house and the fence, the back of the garage. Lighting the open middle of a lawn achieves very little.
  4. Deterrence comes from change, not from being lit. A light that switches on when someone approaches signals attention. A light that has been on all night is scenery.

Note: Do not use security-grade brightness on an entertaining area. 2,500 lm of 5000K light over an outdoor dining table is unpleasant to sit under and attracts every insect within range. Keep those areas warm (3000K) and modest, and put the bright, cool light where nobody sits.

PIR sensors and how to set them

A passive infrared sensor detects moving heat. The three adjustments on the back of almost every PIR fitting are the difference between a light that works and one that gets switched to permanent-on within a fortnight.

LUX — when it is allowed to trigger

Sets the ambient light level below which the sensor is active. Wound fully to the sun symbol, the light triggers in daylight; fully to the moon, only in full darkness. Set it in the evening at the light level where you actually want it coming on, not at midday.

TIME — how long it stays on

Usually adjustable from about 10 seconds to 10 minutes. For a driveway or a path, 1–3 minutes is right: long enough to get from the car to the door, short enough not to be effectively permanent. Long time settings are the main reason sensor lights feel broken.

SENS — how readily it triggers

The one people fight with. Too sensitive and it fires at cats, possums, moving foliage and warm exhaust drifting past. Turn it down before you conclude the sensor is faulty.

Getting the coverage right

  • Mount at 2–2.5 m. Higher extends the range but flattens the detection angle; lower gives sharp detection over a small area.
  • PIR detects movement across its field far better than movement toward it. Angle the sensor so people cross its view rather than walk straight at it. This is why a sensor aimed straight down a driveway often does not fire until the car is on top of it.
  • Keep heat sources out of the field. Air conditioner condensers, flues, BBQs, dark metal that holds the day's heat, and swaying sunlit foliage will all cause false triggers.
  • Aim away from the boundary. Both for false triggers from the footpath and for neighbourly reasons — light spill onto a neighbouring property is a common source of council complaints.

Most sensor fittings also have a manual override — flicking the wall switch off and on quickly usually forces the light to stay on. Worth knowing when you are carrying things in from the car.

The point that catches people: IP rating and corrosion resistance are different things. An IP65 fitting is sealed against water but its housing and fixings can still be destroyed by salt air. Layering the exterior

A properly lit exterior has three layers doing different jobs.

Layer 1 — ambient

Low-level light that is on whenever the house is occupied at night. Wall lights beside the door, step lights on the stairs, spike lights in the garden bed. This is what makes the house look lived-in and lets you move around without triggering anything.

Layer 2 — task

Light where you actually do things: the front door lock, the letterbox, the BBQ, the side gate. Modest output, positioned precisely.

Layer 3 — security

Bright, sensor-triggered, aimed at approaches. Off most of the time — that is the point.

Get the first two right and the third one does its job better, because a person moving through a dimly but evenly lit yard is visible before the flood ever triggers.

Colour temperature outdoors

Nearly everything above is tri-colour switchable. Use 5000K for security positions, where high contrast reads better to both the eye and a camera, and 3000K anywhere people sit — warm light is more inviting and attracts noticeably fewer insects. More in our colour temperature guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many lumens do I need for a security light?

1,500–2,500 lm for a driveway, 800–1,200 lm for a side path or back door, and 700–1,300 lm for a front entrance. Several moderate fittings give better coverage than one very bright one, which mostly produces glare and deep shadow beside it.

Why does my sensor light keep turning on by itself?

Almost always the sensitivity setting, combined with something warm or moving in the detection field — an air conditioner unit, a flue, sunlit foliage, or a possum. Turn the SENS dial down and re-aim the sensor away from the heat source and the boundary.

How long should a sensor light stay on?

One to three minutes for a driveway or path — long enough to get from the car to the door, short enough that it still reads as a response rather than as permanent lighting.

What IP rating do I need for outdoor lights?

IP44 under deep, sheltered eaves; IP54 on a partly sheltered exterior wall; IP65 for fully exposed positions and anything at ground level. Near the coast, add 316 marine-grade stainless on top of the IP rating — sealing against water does not protect against salt.

Should security lights be warm or cool white?

Cool white, around 5000K, for security positions — the higher contrast reads better to the eye and on camera. Keep warm white (3000K) for entertaining areas, where cool light is unpleasant to sit under and attracts far more insects.

Is it better to leave outdoor lights on all night?

For deterrence, no. A light that has been on all night is part of the scenery; a light that switches on as someone approaches signals that they have been noticed. Use low-level ambient lighting continuously and reserve the bright, sensor-triggered fittings for the approaches.

Can I install outdoor security lights myself?

Not the hard-wired ones — that is licensed electrical work in Australia. Some exterior fittings are supplied with a quick-connect base that makes the electrician's job faster, but the connection itself still has to be made by a licensed electrician.
